End of a Great Season

After a great season, the Outlaws weren’t able to keep the win streak going against the Pirates in the Semi Final game.
With promising starting momentum with an 80 yards TD on the opening kick off return by Rookie Dan Adams, the Outlaws started strong but when the next drive was stalled when a 50 Yards TD strike to WR Grant McNaughton was called back…the Outlaws O just couldn’t get started again against a very tough Pirates D.

Looking back, 4 weeks without a game after a forfeit by the Mustangs on the last regular season game…The Outlaws preparations coming in to the Semi Final game was not what it should have been, but there are no excuses..The Pirates were just too strong on the day and they deserved the win and the shot at the Waratah bowl.

All in all it was a great season for the Outlaws, after an horrific start in round 1 against the Lions, then seven wins in a row to finish the regular season in 2nd place with an 8 win, 2 loss record for 2011.

All the players, coaches and club executive would like to that all the supporters, family and friends for their support throughout the season…without you and your support we would not have had such a great year.

Winning Ugly

The Outlaws continued their 7 game winning streak and run into the playoffs with another hard fought but narrow win over the Wollongong Mustangs.

In the low scoring game, the Outlaws found themselves in the endzone first, courtesy of a 15 yards run by RB Stuart Etcell when he broke the edge and was too strong with the goaline in sight. Extra point was kicked by Rookie Josh Biles.

The Mustangs were never going to make it easy, and scored their first points via a long pass mid way through the 2nd Quarter after the Outlaws defense let them get out of jail with 2 silly penalties on Mustangs 3rd downs. The Mustangs iced the cake with a successful 2pt conversion which carried them into the second half with an 8-7 lead.

Both defenses set to work in the 3rd quarter and neither team was able to build any momentum until mid way through the 4th Quarter, when the Outlaws snatched the lead courtesy of a 30 yard field goal again by Josh Biles.

After the kickoff, a fired up Outlaw defense took matters into their own hands when Rookie DB Steven Albee snatched a mustangs pass out of the air and exploded the 30 yards to the Mustangs End Zone for his first career Pick-6. Outlaws were unable unsuccessful on the PAT try… Outlaws 16 Mustangs 8

The Mustangs offense showed their never say die attitude..and it wasn’t long before they struck back with a 10 yard strike to Utility player Brad Gollege who broke 2 tackles and claimed another 6 points for the stangs. The 2 point conversion this time unsuccessful when the Mustangs tried to tie up the match.

The Outlaws Defense closed out the game when Safeties Willy Weathers and Jayden Pilling made a huge play defending the final pass into the endzone by the mustangs that could have won them the game.

Outlaws defeat Pirates in the inaugural “Boob Bowl”

The Outlaws continued their strong run into the playoffs with a narrow win over the Pirates 13-12. Both teams banded together to try to raise money and raise awareness of breast cancer in the inaugural “Boob Bowl” game which will now be an annual event for the two teams.

With players donning Pink socks and football equipment and collections being made around the ground, the game started as expected with tough swarming defense from both teams holding offensive production to a minimum until late in the second quarter when the Pirates QB popped a screen pass to the running back who caught a few blocks who opened up the sideline for a 60 yard TD run…missing the PAT try.

Receiving the ball in the 2nd half both teams started where they left off with tough defensive stands but the Pirates again got the upper hand mid way through the 3rd Quarter when an off tackle run broke the edge of the Outlaws D for a 20 Yard TD run…again missing the PAT try.

Trailing by 12 points going in to the last quarter of a game, against a quality opponent is not the best place to be..but the Outlaws were never going to give up.

The comeback trail started with great field position after the Pirates kick-off after a 45 yard kick-off return by Outlaw #84 Dan Adams…but the Pirates D was again proving to tough, preventing the Outlaws Offense from moving the ball.

The Outlaws defense stepped up to the challenge, with Linebacker Andrew Asher forcing a fumble after a punishing hit on the Pirates RB at mid field which was recovered by DE Callan Goldstone. The great defensive play spurred the Offense on but after a 30 yards strike from QB Matt Smith to WR Ryan Donnelly they stalled again at the hands of the tough Pirates D.

With DEFENSE being the word for the day, the Outlaws D weren’t going to be outdone. With the Pirates starting with the ball on their own 10 yard line..NT Leroy Masoe pounced on the Pirates RB on a dive through the middle, forcing another fumble which was recovered by LB Keiran Fyfe.

The Outlaw offense finally managed to make some adjustments, starting on the Pirates 15 yard line QB Matt Smith quickly hit WR Grant McNaughton who took it to inches from the end zone…where RB Stuart Etcell did the rest, punching it in behind good blocks…McNaughton getting the extra point to put the score at Pirates 12 – Outlaws 7 with five minutes left of the game.

Both teams were unable to produce anything from their next offensive series, but with the Pirates inside their own 20 the Outlaw Defensive took control of the game and forced their 3rd fumble of the game, recovered by DE Roy Morgan, giving the Outlaws O their last chance to snatch the win in the final 2 minutes of the game.

After a couple of wayward passes, QB Matt Smith finally hit WR Josh Waycaster for a 15 yard reception on the Pirates 5 yard line. With the endzone so close, and the game on the line..The Outlaws O showed their belief…and after 2 plays punch RB Stuart Etcell in to score what would be the game winning TD. After missing the PAT try, the outlaws took the lead for the first time in the game with less than a minute left to play. Outlaws 13 – Pirates 12

The tough outlaw defense defended out the remainder of the game, sealing the game and the win in the inaugural “Boob Bowl” – Outlaws 13 – Pirates 12

Penrith City Gridiron and West Sydney Pirates would like to thank everyone who participated in and came down to support the Breast cancer awareness day. Both teams managed to raise over $1000 for this very worthwhile charity.

Outlaws jump to 2nd Place after Dominating UTS

The Penrith city Outlaws continued their good form this past weekend after a dominating 34-12 win over the UTS Gators.

After winning the toss and electing to receive the kick-off, the Outlaws set the tone of the game with TE Daniel Adams powering the ball to the UTS 30 yard line.

On the first offensive play of the game QB Brad Leech hit receiver Josh Waycaster in the corner of the end-zone with a pinpoint 30 yard pass to put the Outlaws 6-nil up after 2 minutes of play.

The UTS Offense started off firing after starting with a touch-back, but were unable to finish a good starting drive when then Outlaws D found their rhythm in their own red-zone, turning the ball over on 4th down after a 10 yards sack by DE Callan Goldstone.

Two plays later, the Outlaws Offense found themselves in the end-zone for the second time of the game, after the Line opened a seam for RB Stuart Etcell who was too quick for the UTS backfield after the cutback and legged it out 45 yards putting the Outlaws 13 points in front after the Successful PAT try.

UTS Scored next with well put together drive saw them in the Endzone courtesy of lightening edge running by RB Jean Prill and power up the guts in the form of RB Gabriel Marambio. Outlaws 13 – UTS 6

The fun of the 1st QTR didn’t stop there. The UTS defense was unable to slow up the Outlaws power running game and 3 plays later Etcell found himself in the End-zone once more after being given another great outside running lane and driving over the UTS DB in the corner for the score, followed by another PAT. Outlaws 20 – UTS 6

Now that they had their rhythm, the Outlaws D kept their end of the bargain, holding the UTS Offensive production to 4 and out after another timely 10 yard Sack by Defensive Tackle, Lei ‘Junior’ Saena forced UTS to punt at the turn of the Qtr and giving the Offense the ball back on the 50 yard line after a shanked UTS punt.

After a 5 more plays, some great QB scrambling, mixed on with the odd Fumble out of bounds…RB Stuart Etcell found another crease in the UTS interior line and exploded for 40 yards up the middle for his 3rd TD of the game. With the PAT try successful. Outlaws 27 – UTS 6

The game slowed up in the 2nd QTR with both teams struggling to move the ball as both Defenses fought hard to keep their teams in the games. This was capped off for the Outlaws when Nose tackle Matt Wilson fell on a fumbled UTS to turn the ball over on the 10 yard line as UTS looked dangerous. 2 series later the Gators found themselves in the end zone courtesy of a 10 yard pass from Irrgang to Weekes. Outlaws 27 – UTS 12

After the half time break, the 3rd QTR was an arm wrestle with the adjustments of both Defenses keeping the Offenses away from scoring opportunities.

Early in the 4th Qtr, the heavens opened and signaled the impending Apocalypse when Outlaw Linebacker Keiran “Stonehands” Fyfe snatched an Irrgang pass out of the air to rumble to the UTS 40 yards line setting up the only scoring drive of the second half when QB Brad Leech caught the UTS Secondary napping and hit WR Grant McNaughton in the corner of the End-zone with a 30 yard strike which was converted to take the score to Outlaws 34 UTS 12.

The Outlaw defense finished the game of strongly, stopping the UTS final drive with an interception by Rookie corner Steven Albee allowing the Outlaws O to run down the clock and secure the Outlaws 5 straight win and jumping them into 2nd place on the ladder.
